The most forgiving man in showbiz

Early 1970s, I was drumming with The Pelaco Bros and met Peter; did a session in his Carlton studio with John Rees on bass, good feel. Peter then organised a lunchtime gig at Monash Uni (Clayton).

Great, so off into my green mini-van (with windows), drums in back and in Darling Rd, East Malvern, I was pulled up by the cops (‘attracting attention’ was the phrase used to justify apprehension).

“I’m off to a gig officer”

They searched my small vehicle and found a drum kit and an ounce of weed.

“Is that yours sir?”

At first I said no, but then (thanks to the cop) realised the ‘dealing aspect’. Was hauled down to Prahran police station, called Peter blowing the gig. He was understanding, spoke to the cops. I was let go, see you in court.

The ounce was actually for my lawyer friend who then represented me in Prahran court… verdict? $100 in the poorbox.

Peter and I are still friends.
